Delaware River Sprayed for Black Flies

A stretch of the Delaware River starting in Columbia, N.J. and ending in Yardley will be sprayed for flies by helicopter today.

Bucks County officials note that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will conduct a black fly suppression aerial spraying operation along the Delaware River on Monday. Aerial spraying will be occur along the Delaware River in Northampton and Bucks Counties in Pennsylvania and Warren, Hunterdon, and Mercer Counties in New Jersey. The operational area will be between Slateford, PA/Columbia, NJ and Yardley, PA/Trenton, NJ. Typical operations involve the application of Vectobac 12AS (a brown, viscous, liquid material that smells like fish oil) from a helicopter. Body Found in Delaware River, Police Say

A body was found in the Delaware River in Bristol Township, according to police.

The body of a man was found in the Delaware River in Bristol Township on Saturday, according to police. An article on PhillyBurbs said a boater found the body around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday behind Dow Chemical on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River.  Bristol Township Detective Tim Fuhrmann told the publication that the man was found wearing jeans, a Phillies T-shirt and a blue hooded sweatshirt and had been in the water for some time. The Bucks County Coroner Dr. Joseph Campbell told PhillyBurbs that investigators think the man was at least 40 years old. Officials: Flooding Likely After Storm

Officials in Bristol Borough and along the Neshaminy Creek are warning of flooding on Thursday and Friday following a massive weather system.

Officials in the lower portion of the county are warning residents who live along the Delaware River and Neshaminy Creek that flooding is a threat in the coming days. Bristol Borough emergency management officials said the "Mill Street Parking Lot is likely to flood the next few days on high tide." They also asked residents along Radcliffe Street to secure "floatable" items and to remove electronic and valuables from lower levels. Bucks County emergency planners cautioned residents who live near the banks of the Neshaminy Creek Bristol, Bensalem, Langhorne, Lower Southampton, Middletown and Northampton to "monitor the creek and take protective actions if necessary." Governor Praises Effort to Secure Funding for Delaware River Dredging

The project will deepen the Delaware River’s entire 103-mile main shipping channel from 40 to 45 feet so it can accommodate larger ships and compete with other ports.

Gov. Tom Corbett last week praised Pennsylvania’s U.S. congressional delegation for their hard work in securing additional federal funding for the dredging of the Delaware River and joining the state’s efforts in continuing this critical project for southeastern Pennsylvania. “By investing in the future of the Port of Philadelphia, we are saving existing jobs and creating tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs for the region and the state,” said Corbett in a release. “Working with our federal partners we have now secured more than $60 million for this project since I took office.” The Governor thanked senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey as well as representatives Bob Brady (PA-01 and Patrick Meehan (PA-07) and the entire Pennsylvania …

Bipartisan House Group Proposes Delaware River Basin Legislation

It would support flood control and water quality.

A bipartisan group of ten U.S. Representatives from Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania introduced legislation Friday to enhance habitat, water quality and flood control improvements for fish, wildlife and people in the Delaware River Basin.  According to a release, the legislation requires the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to identify, prioritize, and implement restoration and conservation activities in the entire Basin, which is home to eight million people and provides drinking water to 15 million. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-8th) was among the congress members that proposed the Delaware River Basin Conservation Act of 2011, which will not add to the current budget deficit.
