Flu cases are starting to fall in Pennsylvania but plenty of other illnesses still are going around.
If it feels like everyone you know is or has been sick recently, it's probably because they have. This year's flu season actually hasn't been terrible, said Dr. David Damsker. But legions of other viruses have been circulating along with the flu, making it a bad season overall for illness. "This is probably the worst non-flu respiratory season I’ve seen in a long time," said Damsker, who is head of the Bucks County Department of Health, based in Doylestown. "We’ve had more people sick this year than in any recent year I can remember. There’s so much going around." Among this season's culprits are norovirus, coronavirus and adenoviruses, Damsker said. A Bensalem urgent care center has begun to implement protocols for a potential flu epidemic.
Due to the large number of patients with flu-like symptoms, a Bensalem urgent care center has begun to implement protocols for a potential flu epidemic. AllMed Comprehensive Care Center, which is the only urgent care center in the Lower Bucks County area, had 30 cases of the flu or flu-like symptoms over the first weekend in January, the center's administrator said. Therefore, the center has instituted flu protocols in case a flu epidemic is declared. "We are experiencing a very high volume of flu patients in comparison to prior years as has the local hospitals," Administrator Robert Baca said. It's still not too late to get a flu shot. There's been a big increase in flu cases in Pennsylvania in recent weeks. The following health tip is from the Pa. Department of Health: Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. It attacks the respiratory tract in humans (nose, throat, and lungs). The flu is different from a cold. Influenza usually comes on suddenly and may include these symptoms: These symptoms are usually referred to as "flu-like symptoms." If you think you have the flu, or do get sick, stay home from work or school so that you don’t infect or make others ill.

West Nile virus has been making headlines locally and nationally, so what does this mean for you? Should you be worried and how does this compare with other diseases?
West Nile virus made national news this week with an announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We're in the midst of one of the largest West Nile virus outbreaks ever seen in the United States,” said Dr. Lyle Petersen on Tuesday, who is the director of the Division of Vector-borne Infectious Diseases at the CDC. We are hearing more about West Nile virus and the cases of the virus being found on our doorstep.
