Community Prom Pride Project Wraps Up At Pro Hair Salon

The salon was one of several businesses that made prom possible.

With less than six hours to go, Danielle Martin was getting her free up-do at Pro Hair Salon on Street Road in preparation for her senior prom Friday at the U.S. Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Her hair and makeup were at center stage as the Bensalem High senior repeatedly expressed her thanks. But it was her smile and that of her mom, Loralee, that said it all. “It's the best time of their lives and everybody deserves that,” salon manager Chickie Horton said in explaining why she and stylist Valerie Bolger decided to take part in the school district's inaugural Community Prom Pride Project. Bolger agreed. “Every girl should go to her prom,” she said. After nominations were made by guidance counselors, Danielle was chosen along with …

Shop: In the Name of Prom

Nothing good comes of shopping for prom dresses.

It’s almost May, and if you happen to have a teen-aged girl, there’s a good chance she’s going to prom. Or thinking about prom. Or hoping to be asked to prom. Or planning for prom. For some reason, most teen girls are consumed by it in some form or another. Parents, on the other hand, would rather see the arrival of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The most important part of prom, for many, is the dress. It’s second only to a girl’s wedding dress. The search for it will more than likely take just as much time. Now, take the stress of prom, and add not one, but two girls, and you can see that I had a recipe for disaster brewing. Most girls head straight for the mall, which by and large caters to the teen set. I, however, hate the mall. …

Unbelievably, we had to do this another year with both, then one more with my younger daughter, the one in the picture. Thankfully, our third child, Dakota, is a boy (big sigh of relief).   more ›

Bridal Salon A Longtime Dream For Owner

The Country Bride and Gent a longtime success in Bensalem.

Trish Burkholder always knew she wanted to own a bridal store. "As a little girl I was fascinated and infatuated by bridal gowns and accessories and everything that went into it," said the King of Prussia native. "I remember watching the wedding of Tricia Nixon in the Rose Garden and I thought it was the most romantic event." Today, Trish and husband Ed own two bridal stores -- The Country Bride and Gent in Bensalem and the Lansdale area. Their sales volume -- in helping couples with their weddings and proms -- puts them in the top 10 percent of independent bridal stores in the country. Trish earned a degree in marketing and business, with an emphasis in fashion merchandising, from the University of Dayton. She started her retail career as…

More Businesses Help BHS Seniors Get To Prom

Young ladies pick out their free dresses at Golden Asp.

Three more township businesses added their generosity to the inaugural Community Prom Pride Project on the same day two Bensalem High School seniors picked out their free dresses. Pro Hair Salon, Salon Montage and Sport Clips are offering their services free of charge, joining Golden Asp, The Country Bride and Gent and Barbara's Floral Designs in helping seniors Danielle Martin, Artina Nimpson, Juan Morales Gonzales and Kristofer Sippel get to their prom next month. Under the program, 23 students who overcame personal challenges in their young lives were nominated by guidance counselors and social workers, with four students ultimately chosen by Supervisor of Pupil Services Tammy Wood. "The accomplishments and struggles that each of these …

Bensalem Businesses Make Prom Dreams Come True

Golden Asp, Country Bride & Gent and Barbara’s Floral Expressions donate prom necessities.

Several local businesses are helping four Bensalem High School seniors get to their prom this year. The Golden Asp is leading the way in the inaugural Community Prom Pride Project by offering two free prom dresses along with accessories and jewelry. Country Bride & Gent is providing two free tuxedo rentals along with shoes, shirts and ties. And Barbara's Floral Expressions is giving the students nosegays and boutonnieres. The four students -- who were among 23 nominated by their guidance counselors and social workers -- are Danielle Martin, Artina Nimpson, Juan Morales Gonzales and Kristofer Sippel. "The accomplishments and struggles that each of these students has experienced thus far represents the stories of many of our students. They …

BCCC To Host LGBT Prom

The event is open to both gay and heterosexual couples throughout the community.

The prom is a quintessential moment in the life of most teenagers. You get dressed up, buy a corsage and maybe even pick up your date in a limo.  But some same-sex teen couples don’t have a chance to experience the prom in high school. So members of Bucks County Community College’s Open Door Club are giving them an opportunity to celebrate prom in a way they are comfortable. The Open Door Club is hosting its annual LGBT Prom on Friday, April 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the college’s Gallagher Room. The LGBT (stands for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) Prom is open to the public. All BCCC students are invited to attend, as well as high school students and members of the public. Both gay and heterosexual couples are welcomed to attend. Open …
