20-Year-Old Cancer Patient Honored at Blood Drive

A Red Cross sponsored blood drive will be held on Wednesday, March 13 to benefit Jean Shapcott, a 20-year-old who has a rare form of liver cancer.

A benefit and blood drive will be held to raise awareness for a Bristol Borough resident who is in stage four of a rare form of liver cancer.  Jean Shapcott, who is a 2010 graduate of Bristol Borough High School—where the drive will be held—found out days before Christmas that she has fibrolmellular hepatocellular carcinoma. This type of cancer is so rare that only 200 cases have been reported worldwide according to a Bucks Local News article. The drive, which is sponsored by the Red Cross, will be held on Wednesday, March 13 from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the high school. UPDATE: Emergency Shelter at Bensalem School Closed

The shelter was relocated from Pennsbury High School to Russell C. Struble Elementary School.

  The Lower Bucks County emergency shelter at Russell C. Struble Elementary School in Bensalem was closed today. It was moved to Bensalem from Pennsbury High School East Tuesday due to a power outage, Red Cross spokesman Dave Schrader said. Bensalem Asst. Public Safety Superintendent Pat Ponticelli told Patch the shelter was closed by the county at 2:25 p.m. He said the two remaining individuals in the shelter were homeless and officials were searching for suitable accomidations for them.

  The American Red Cross launched its official Hurricane App Wednesday. This free app is the second in a series to be created by the American Red Cross for use on both iPhone and Android. It gives instant access to local and real time information on what to do before, during, and after hurricanes. The Hurricane App follows the recently released Red Cross First Aid App which has had nearly 600,000 downloads in just six weeks. March is Red Cross Month

Support the American Red Cross by donating blood or volunteering.

March is the designated month to remind the community of the work that the American Red Cross does and to raise awareness on the need for public support in order to help those in need. The Red Cross started back in 1881 by Clara Barton and was officially chartered by Congress in 1900 to provide national and international relief during disaster, according the organization's website. Since then, people in throughout the United States have volunteered and donated funds to support the Red Cross in its mission to provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Local Red Cross Responds to 14 Weekend Fires; Helps 72 People

MLK weekend described as "busiest" of new year.

  Between 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13 and 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, the American Red Cross of Southeastern PA responded to 14 fires, providing assistance to 17 families, 72 people. 8 families made up of 11 adults and 3 children affected from this weekend’s fires are now seeking shelter at our one of a kind Red Cross House, the Center for Disaster Recovery. This has been the busiest weekend of 2012, and unfortunately, it is well above normal. This holiday weekend also claimed another life due to fire- the city’s 5th fire victim of 2012.   While everyone is shopping, baking, gift wrapping, decorating and going to parties, the American Red Cross, Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter has holiday tips to help make the season a safe one. 1. Prepare vehicle for traveling to grandmother’s house. Build an emergency kit and include items such as blankets or sleeping bags, jumper cables, fire extinguisher, compass and road maps, shovel, tire repair kit and pump, extra clothing, flares, and a tow rope. 2. The recent earthquake, Hurricane Irene, heavy rains, flooding and thunderstorms, along with this past spring storms in the South and Midwest in addition to the house fires so many families experience on a nightly basis should reinforce to everyone how important it is to be prepared.
