'Arts at Bucks' Festival is Underway
The Arts at Bucks festival at Bucks County Community College opens Wednesday, April 15 and will feature various demonstrations and performances through May 14.
Bucks County Community College’s Arts at Bucks Celebration gets underway this week and will feature free concerts, demonstrations, exhibitions and more in a series of events that are open to the public. Many of the events are free. The month-long celebration begins Wednesday, April 15 and goes through May 14. "The annual Arts at Bucks festival showcases the talent and academic excellence available at the public, two-year school," according to a BCCC press release. Bucks is one of the few community colleges in the nation that is an accredited institutional member of both the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the press release said. BCCC Dedicates Pavilion in Honor of Former President
College officials on Thursday dedicated a new 9,000-square-foot addition in honor of its third president.
Bucks County Community College officials on Thursday, April 11 dedicated a new 9,000-square-foot addition in honor of former BCCC President Dr. James J. Linksz. The Dr. James J. Linksz Pavilion, honoring the college’s third president who retired last year after 20 years of leading the institution, connects the Rollins Center with the Gymnasium and Pemberton Hall. “I see how this is going to be a link between so many different places on the campus,” said Linksz. “This promises to be a new heart of the campus, opening a new experience for students, faculty, and staff.” Dr. Stephanie Shanblatt, who succeeded Dr. Linksz as college president last fall, opened the dedication ceremony, which included Blake Eisenhart, chair, BCCC Trustees; Robert …

Bucks County High School Art Exhibition Opens April 1
The Bucks County High School Art Exhibition, which will be held at Bucks County Community College's Newtown Campus, features more than 200 works of art in a variety of media.
The 18th Annual Bucks County High School Art Exhibition opens April 1 at Bucks County Community College’s Hicks Art Center Gallery. A closing reception that will feature a Congressional Art Contest awards ceremony with Rep. Michael Fitzpatrick will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 7. The show features more than 200 works of art in a variety of media such as painting, drawing, photography, graphic design, stained glass, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and jewelry. The works were submitted by 48 art teachers from 17 high schools throughout the county. It is coordinated by faculty member Cris Martino. Several college faculty members have chosen one first-place and three honorable-mention winners for the annual Congressional Art Contest. …

BCCC Hosting Open House for Prospective Students
A free open house for prospective students and their parents will be held on April 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Newtown campus.
If you're interested in learning what the local community college has to offer, mark your calendar for April 3. That's when Bucks County Community College will host a free open house for prospective students and their parents. The open house will be held in Tyler Hall on the Newtown campus from 6 to 8 p.m. Professors, students and parents will be there to offer input, answer questions and share experiences. Representatives from six academic departments will be there to discuss the nearly 80 majors offered at BCCC. Officials from the college’s financial aid and other student-services departments will also be on hand. Half a Million Dollars Given to BCCC by Anonymous Donor
An anonymous donor has given Bucks County Community College $500,000, the largest gift ever received by the college.
Bucks County Community College has received the largest gift in its 49-year history—$500,000 given from an anonymous 1972 alumnus. The benefactor, a Doylestown native, was the first person in his family to attend college, according to BCCC officials. After successfully completing his first semester at BCCC, he was drafted into the Army where he spent the next three years, including one tour in Vietnam. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, the anonymous donor was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. He returned to Bucks County in 1969, where he finished his degree at the community college before transferring to a four-year institution, according to a BCCC press release. “Even though this person wished to remain anonymous, the …

BCCC Seeking High School Poet of the Year
The deadline to submit poems for the 26th annual high school poetry contest is March 8.
Bucks County Community College is seeking submissions to its annual High School Poet of the Year contest. Students have until Friday, March 8, to submit three original poems. This is the 26th year for the annual contest. The winner will receive $300, a proclamation from the Bucks County Commissioners and the opportunity to read at an April 14 reception on the college's Newtown campus. Also, the winning poems and one poem from each entrant will be published in an anthology, Writes of Passage Vol. 3, to be distributed at the April 14 reading. Runners-up and finalists in the contest will also be invited to read one poem at the public event. Entries are being accepted from any sophomore, junior or senior enrolled in a Bucks County high …

BCCC's book discussion group is open to all Bucks County residents and meets the second Thursday of the month during the school year.
If your New Year's resolution is to read more, then Bucks County Community College can help you reach your goal. The college is hosting a free Book Discussion Group for all residents. The free, informal gatherings take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month during the academic year on the college’s Newtown campus. The year starts off with a discussion of "The Yellow Birds: A Novel" by Kevin Powers on Thursday, Jan. 10. Written by a veteran of the war in Iraq, the book is a story of two young soldiers trying to stay alive. BCCC to Host 5th Annual Women's Scholarship Tea
Donations benefit women students who support at least one child while seeking a higher education.
The Bucks County Community College Foundation will hold its fifth annual Women’s Scholarship Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. this Thursday. Donations benefit women students who support at least one child while seeking a higher education. The event is presented by First Niagara. The event will be held in Tyler Hall, an 82-year-old historic mansion that’s the cornerstone of the college’s Newtown campus. Tea, light finger sandwiches and desserts will be served. On average, approximately 75 women from local businesses and the community attend, according to Adrienne Clark of the BCCC Foundation. “Last year through the generosity of the attendees, 10 $1,000 scholarships were awarded,” said Clark.
