$90 Million High School Renovation Plan Presented to School Board

The proposed renovation would move Bensalem High School into an academy structure, consolidate three cafeterias into one and construct a new natatorium behind the gymnasium.

Members of the Bensalem School Board had a moment of sticker shock Wednesday evening after representatives from EI Associates and Dewey Engineering presented a renovation plan for the high school with an estimated cost of $90 million. “I don’t know about the other board members, but I’m a little befuddled,” school board President Ralph Douglass said. The school board agreed a few months ago to cap the bond issue at $78 million to fund the project. The proposal for just renovating the existing property, including site work, contingency and soft costs such as permits and fees, came in at an estimate of $77.6 million. Those renovations would reconfigure Bensalem High School into an academy structure, separating classrooms by subject matter. …

Tomorrow night May 22nd 6pm is the time for all taxpayers to come to the Budget Meeting. We as taxpayers cannot tolerate high amounts of spending for high school, while swallowing the corruption that has shown its ugly face. To put it nicely, you cannot spend money you do not have. It is time for the School Board to bite the bullet like the rest of us who are struggling to make ends meet.   more ›

2 Teens Cited with Tobacco Use in School

Two teenagers were caught with tobacco in school, police say.

Two teens were charged with having tobacco on Bensalem High School property, police said in a recent blotter. On Tuesday, April 23 at 12 p.m. a 16-year-old girl was charged and issued a citation for having tobacco in school, police said. Then at 1 p.m., a 15-year-old boy was charged and issued a citation for the same offense. Having tobacco on Bensalem Township High School property is a violation of school rules. Anti-Smoking Program Teaches Elementary Students to 'Kick Butts'

Bensalem Township High School students will head to Cornwells Elementary School to teach kids about the dangers of smoking.

The Kick Butts Generation students from Bensalem Township High School will visit Cornwells Elementary to teach kids about the dangers of smoking. High schoolers will visit fifth and sixth grade students at the elementary school on Thursday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to noon with their "Kick Butts" message. During this time, Cornwells' students will rotate through interactive stations that will educate them to the dangers of smoking, according to information from the school district. Seven stations will be set up to encourage the elementary students to never smoke. One station will allow students to age their face in a video game to see how smoking can make you look older, while another station is focused on coloring anti-smoking pictures. The …

New Interim Principal, Vice Principal Appointed at BHS

Bensalem Township High School has appointed an interim principal and vice principal.

An interim principal and vice principal were named for Bensalem Township High School at the March 27 school board meeting. George V. Carlino will be the interim principal replacing Robert A. Anderson from March 12 through June 30. He will also serve as an educational consultant to assist the district in its search for the next principal. He will be paid a per diem rate of $700 for each eight hour day, members of the board said. After June 30, Carlino may be authorized to assist the district on an as-needed basis at the same per diem rate to help with the High School Principal applicant review process, interviewing candidates and orientation of the selected candidate as approved by the board. State Champion Boys Indoor Track Team Recognized

Rep. Gene DiGirolamo honored the Bensalem Township High School boys indoor track state champions on the House floor.

The Bensalem High School indoor track team were honored by Rep. Gene DiGirolamo on the House floor for their participation in the 2013 state championship. The student athletes were also honored recently at a school board meeting with certificates of recognition for their participation in the championships.

5 Teens Cited with Tobacco Use in School

Over the past week, at least five teenagers under the legal age have been caught with tobacco on school grounds, police said.

Over the past week, at least five teenagers have been cited with tobacco use on school grounds, according to Bensalem Township police reports.  In four separate police blotters, five students under the ago of 18 have been caught with tobacco on Bensalem Township High School property, which is a violation of school rules. The students will all be issued citations. Citations were made at the following date and time, according to Bensalem police: "The use or possession of any tobacco product is not permitted at any time in the school building, on school property, or at a school sponsored activity," according to information in the student and parent handbook for Bensalem Township High School.  Students with a first violation are required to …

Track Team Honored at School Board Meeting

Bensalem High School Indoor Track Team were honored with certificates of recognition for their participation in the 2013 state championship.

Twelve high school students attended the Indoor Track State Championship Meet and were honored with certificates of recognition at a recent school board meeting. Brad Rivera, Kyle Francis, Matt French, Kerron Holley, Armand Cox-Finn, Qhyle Elijah, Daquan Bowser-Guerra, Tarif Walker, Hamzah Massaquoi, Jahleel Weems, Alex Ramirez and Pratik Patel were given certificates by Superintendent Dr. David Baugh. Individual Champions: First Place in the 800 Meters: Brad Rivera. Rivera was also named First Team All-State for the 800 Meters. First Place in the 400 meters, 6th place in the 200 Meters: Qhyle Elijah. Elijah was also named First Team All-State for the 400 Meters. Drama Fills Council Meeting with 'Bye Bye Birdie' Preview

After listening to a preview from Bensalem Township High School's spring musical Bye Bye Birdie, the council declared March 2013 Educational Theater Month. The Drama Club will present its rendition of Bye Bye Birdie in the school's auditorium Thursday, Friday and Saturday March 7, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m., with a matinee at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Music Students Earn Spots on County, State Music Ensembles

Students from Bensalem Township High School have been awarded spots on Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) and the Bucks County Music Educators Association (BCMEA) County Music Festivals.

After auditioning, seven Bensalem Township High School music students have earned spots on county and state music ensembles. The students successfully auditioned into the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) and the Bucks County Music Educators Association (BCMEA) County Music Festivals. In order to become a part of the PMEA, students must audition and compete against students from other high schools in Bucks and Montgomery counties. BCMEA participants audition alongside other high schools from Bucks County. Victoria Leonhardt, Neal Williamson, Anthony Ho, Daniel Perlman, Neal Williamson, Stephanie Schrader and Aaron Quarterman earned spots on these ensembles, according to Bensalem Township School District.
