Zero Tolerance for Seat Belt Violations Over Memorial Day Weekend

Drivers can expect roving patrols, safety checkpoints and special attention to seat belt compliance over Memorial Day Weekend.

PennDOT will partner with more than 600 law enforcement agencies and the Pennsylvania State Police to participate in a national “Click It or Ticket” seat-belt enforcement effort through June 9. The effort will focus largely on nighttime enforcement, using traffic safety checkpoints and roving patrols. Police will also use Traffic Enforcement Zones, which combine roving patrol and checkpoint tactics on roadways with high numbers of unbuckled crashes. According to PennDOT data, 503 people died last year in unbelted crashes, a decrease from 509 such fatalities in 2011. The total number of crashes in which people were not wearing seat belts also decreased to 15,528, compared with 16,298 in 2011. The majority of enforcement will occur at night…

To those who do not think it should be mandatory to wear a seatbelt, I have seen many many brain injuries from not wearing seatbelt and texting while driving. Deaths as well. But death might be better. 18 to 25 year olds (plus older than that range of course) sustaining head injuries so that now they cannot feed themselves, cannot walk, can barely speak normally if at all, incontinent, etc. In …   more ›

Massive Route 13 Overhaul to Begin Soon

The Route 13 project will add sidewalks, reconstruct bridges, medians, get rid of many jug handles and reduce some lanes of travel, officials tell Patch.

After more than a dozen years of talk and speculation, the Route 13 revitalization project is expected to begin in just weeks. The project will begin at the end of January when contractors will begin utility work and drainage installation in the area of Route 13 and Green Lane, PennDOT spokesperson Charles Metzger said. The estimated $40 million project will revamp the roadway from Veterans Highway (Route 413) to the Levittown Parkway. The communities of Bristol, Bristol Township and Tullytown will be impacted by the project. Crews will revitalize the busy commuter route by creating a new median, reconstructing the roadway, adding left turn lanes and ridding the area of several jug handles. Asphalt will replace the recognizable tan …

Asphalt... brilliant. Because some of the most wicked potholes on that stretch of road are known to crop up in the asphalt section where 13 runs through the borough, PennDOT decides that is what we need more of. Same with the left turn lane nonsense, cause the left turn lane at green lane NEVER backs up into the left lane of traffic, right? And the lane reduction, while not a completely terrible …   more ›

Why Judge Simpson Delayed Voter ID Law

A look at the injunction against the Voter ID Law.

Judge Robert Simpson issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday morning, halting certain aspects of the Voter ID Law from impacting the November presidential election. While the decision does not repeal the law that requires citizens to show photo identification to vote, if upheld, the ruling allows registered voters to cast ballots without an ID.  To issue an injunction on the law, Simpson was tasked to consider two questions—does the issuance of IDs "comport with liberal access" that the General Assembly required, and will no voter disenfranchisement exist if the law is implemented this fall? Liberal Access? In returning the case to Simpson, the commonwealth's Supreme Court said then-current procedures were "contrary" to liberal access—a …

PennDOT: Drivers Should Look Out for Students, School Buses

Violations of school bus stopping law carry strong penalties.

As the new school year begins, PennDOT reminds drivers to remain vigilant as students and school buses return to the roadways.  “Our ultimate goal is to make sure everyone safely arrives at their destination,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch in a release. “Motorists should avoid distractions and obey school bus and school zone traffic laws so we have the safest possible environment for students boarding and exiting buses.” By law, motorists approaching from all directions are required to stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. The only exception is when a driver encounters a school bus stopping on the opposite side of a highway clearly separated by a divider, such as concrete …
